Music has always played an important role in my recovery–mostly praise and worship music or anything inspirational. I love music that touches my heart and speaks joy into my heart–or makes me FEEL something–especially when I was empty and couldn’t feel anything.
Today I repeatedly listened to the song River by Josh Grobin and wrote a post on my blog with the video on it. Here is the link if you would like to see it.
The song River touched my heart. Sometimes a song or music in general does that for me. I can lose myself in the beauty and power of music and art–it captures my soul for a while and I lose myself within it. It is extraordinarily healing, soothing and can be exhilarating. I love that when it happens.
This is part of the uplifting chorus to the song River:
“I walk down to the river,
Though I might not understand it,
It’s not always as we planned it,
But we grow stronger when we break…”
The line that spoke to me the most was… but we grow stronger when we break. I wondered why that part of the song spoke the loudest to me. The entire song is beautiful and inspiring to me but that line kept calling me and I soon realized why.
I was broken for many years and was strong to make it through. I learned a lot from overcoming the obstacles I did, surviving and learning to thrive with mental illness and on my long journey of recovery to mental wellness. It made me a better, well-rounded, compassionate and stronger person.

God made our bodies and minds to withstand trauma and brokenness. He equipped our bodies and minds so they could heal fom injuries both physically and emotionally.
When your skin breaks or is cut open, a scar forms. Whether it is a surgical scar or a torn ligament, your body doesn’t heal the area with the same tissue that was there before. During the healing process, the body creates a collagen-based material that bridges the gap of the injury and knits the injury back together–fibrous connective tissue develops over the damage.
An internal mental or emotional scar can be formed as an effect from grief, fear, or other emotion left on a person’s character by an unpleasant experience. After we are mentally and emotionally broken, we will never be the same again. It is a process and takes time but healing and recovery are possible.
If an unpleasant physical or emotional experience scars you, it has a permanent effect on your mind. We can recover and repair ourselves, but we are never exactly the same as we were before. When we recover from emotional or mental wounds, we form internal invisible scars. Those scars become areas of ourselves that are new, usually better, stronger and improved versions of ourselves–better and stronger than we were before the emotional trauma occurred.
To recover and heal fully from anything takes time and strength. The miracle is that recovery and healing are possible and the jubilance stems from the fact that after we break we become stronger and better versions of ourselves.
